Don’t Let Yesterday’s Ashes Convince You the Fire Is Gone

Have you ever looked back at your walk with God and thought, “I used to burn hotter than this?”

Maybe there was a season when prayer came naturally. You couldn’t wait to open your Bible. Worship stirred something deep inside you, and sharing your faith wasn’t something you forced. It simply overflowed.

Then life happened.

Disappointments came. Responsibilities multiplied. You walked through hurt, burnout, delays, unanswered prayers, and spiritual battles. Before long, you found yourself wondering if the fire you once carried had simply gone out.

If that’s where you are today, I want to encourage you with one simple truth:

There is still fire in you.

God reminded me of that as I prepared for this week’s Morning Charge leading into the Ignite Conference. When we hear the word ignite, we naturally think about fire. But before something bursts into flame, there has to be something there to ignite. Even if all that’s left is a small ember, a fresh wind can turn it back into a roaring fire.

One of the biggest lies the enemy loves to whisper is that what God once placed inside of you is gone forever. That’s simply not true. God has not changed His mind about your purpose. He hasn’t abandoned the calling He placed on your life, and He certainly hasn’t forgotten about you. What He started, He still desires to complete.

The Apostle Paul told Timothy, “Stir up the gift of God.” He didn’t tell him to go find another gift. He reminded him that God had already placed something inside of him that simply needed to be awakened again. Sometimes that’s exactly what we need—not a brand-new calling, but a renewed surrender.

Fire doesn’t maintain itself.

Throughout Scripture, the fire on God’s altar had to be tended, protected, and continually supplied with fuel. Left alone, it would eventually burn low. Our relationship with Jesus works much the same way. Time in His presence, prayer, worship, obedience, and His Word are the fuel that keeps our hearts burning. They don’t earn God’s love, but they position us to experience His presence in fresh ways.

One of my favorite reminders from this teaching comes from Isaiah’s picture of the smoking flax. Even when the flame seems gone, the wick is still warm. Jesus doesn’t throw it away. He gently breathes on it until it burns again. If you’ve been feeling spiritually dry, don’t mistake a season of weariness for the end of your story. God specializes in breathing life into places that seem almost extinguished.

Something else we talked about is being intentional about who we surround ourselves with. Passion is contagious. If you’re constantly around people who are cynical, complacent, or spiritually cold, don’t be surprised when your own fire begins to cool. On the other hand, spending time with believers who genuinely love Jesus has a way of stirring your own heart toward Him.

The beautiful news is that God doesn’t ask you to manufacture passion. He simply invites you back into His presence. Sometimes prayer isn’t a long list of words. Sometimes it’s simply sitting quietly before Him and saying, “Lord, here I am.” That’s often where the fresh wind begins.

Maybe today is the day you stop believing the lie that your best days with God are behind you. Maybe the ember is still there, quietly waiting for the breath of heaven.

Don’t settle for cold when Jesus is still inviting you into the fire.
