Is That Me, or Is That You, Lord? | Morning Charge Blog

How do you know if a thought, desire, or idea is really from the Lord or just from your own heart? This Morning Charge recap looks at what Scripture says…

This morning on The Morning Charge, we talked about something every believer has wrestled with at some point:

“Is that me, or is that You, Lord?”

Sometimes we have thoughts, ideas, desires, and plans that feel strong, but that does not automatically mean they are from God. One of the biggest parts of spiritual growth is learning how to tell the difference between the voice of the Lord and our own internal wants, emotions, or selfish ambitions.

That matters because not every strong feeling is confirmation, and not every open door is from God.

Hearing God Starts With Surrender

One of the biggest points from today’s teaching was this:

If you are too attached to your own outcome, it becomes hard to hear God clearly.

A surrendered heart says, “Lord, speak, and I will obey.”
An unsurrendered heart says, “Lord, say what I want to hear.”

That is a big difference.

The clearer our surrender becomes, the clearer our hearing often becomes too.

What Does It Mean That God Gives Us the Desires of Our Heart?

We also talked about Psalm 37:4, where Scripture says that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart.

That does not mean God simply hands us whatever we want.

It means that as we truly delight in Him, He begins to shape our heart, purify our motives, and align our desires with His will. Sometimes He fulfills desires that came from Him. Other times, He changes desires that never did.

The key is not chasing what we want. The key is delighting in Him first.

God’s Voice Will Always Agree With His Word

Another major point from today was this:

God’s voice will never contradict God’s Word.

If a thought, desire, or direction pulls you away from holiness, obedience, humility, truth, or surrender, it is not coming from Him.

That is why the Word matters so much. Scripture keeps us anchored. It helps us test what we are hearing and keeps us from mistaking our own voice for His.

A Few Things to Reflect On

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • Is this desire drawing me closer to Christ or deeper into self?
  • Does this line up with Scripture?
  • Is this peace from God, or am I just chasing comfort?
  • Have I truly surrendered my own outcome?
  • Am I willing for God to say no?

Final Encouragement

If you want to hear the Lord clearly, stay close to His heart.

Get in the Word.
Get in prayer.
Stay surrendered.
And let Him deal with your desires before you run with them.

The goal is not just to hear a voice.
The goal is to follow His voice.
