The Cost of Staying the Same

There is a cost to change, but there is also a cost to staying the same, and if we are honest, staying the same often costs more.

This week on The Morning Charge, we have talked about surrender, daily obedience, bringing life back into God’s order, and making the home an altar again. All of that has been leading us to one major question:

What happens if we hear the truth, feel the conviction, know God is calling us higher, and still refuse to change?

That is where this gets real.

Because God is merciful. He is patient. He is gracious. He gives us chance after chance. But we cannot keep mistaking His patience for permission to remain the same.

Surrender Requires a Response

Surrender is not just something we sing about.

It is not just a moment where we say, “Lord, I give You everything,” and then go right back to controlling our life, protecting our comfort, and holding on to the same habits.

Surrender is only the starting point, but daily obedience is where the fruit begins to grow.

James 1:22 tells us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only.

That means there comes a point where more information is not the answer. Another podcast is not the answer. Another service is not the answer. Another emotional moment is not the answer.

At some point, obedience has to begin.

We have to ask a better question.

Not just, “Lord, what should I do?”

But, “What happens if I refuse to do it?”

That question carries weight.

Delayed Obedience Has a Cost

A lot of people are not saying no to God outright. They are saying, “I’m just not ready yet.”

But delayed obedience is still disobedience.

Hebrews 3:15 warns us not to harden our hearts when we hear His voice. 2 Corinthians 6:2 reminds us that now is the day of salvation.

God deals with us in the now of obedience.

When He shines light on something, He is not doing it to condemn us. He is doing it because He loves us enough to expose what is keeping us bound.

But when we keep pushing conviction down, ignoring truth, justifying compromise, or saying, “I’ll deal with it later,” our hearts begin to harden.

That is one of the costs of staying the same.

The more we delay, the easier compromise becomes. The longer we resist, the quieter conviction can start to feel.

That is dangerous ground.

Open Doors Create Stagnant Water

When life feels scattered, cluttered, and spiritually stagnant, it may be time to let God bring everything back into order.

Sometimes we blame the enemy for everything that is blocked in our lives.

And yes, the enemy lies, tempts, accuses, and tries to steal, kill, and destroy.

But sometimes we are the ones who opened the door.

Unforgiveness opens doors.
Hidden sin opens doors.
Pride opens doors.
Bitterness opens doors.
Wrong motives open doors.
Compromise opens doors.
Disobedience opens doors.

Then we wonder why the flow feels blocked.

The Lord wants to break the dam and let living water flow again, but we have to stop partnering with the very things that keep building the blockage.

This is why daily surrender matters.

Jesus said to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him. Surrender is not a one-time event. It is a daily decision to keep our lives on the altar before the Lord.

Staying the Same Can Harden the Heart

Proverbs 29:1 gives a serious warning about someone who is often corrected but continues to harden themselves.

That is not something to play with.

The issue is not that God stopped loving someone. The issue is that a person can keep resisting truth until they become stiff-necked, hardened, and less responsive to the voice of God.

Romans 1 shows the danger of people repeatedly rejecting truth until God gives them over to the path they insist on walking. Hosea 4:17 and Psalm 81:11-12 also show the weight of people choosing idols, stubbornness, and their own counsel over the ways of God.

That is not because God is cruel.

It is because love does not force surrender.

God warns. God convicts. God sends truth. God gives opportunities to turn.

But He will not make us obey.

Saul Is a Warning

The life of Saul is a serious picture of what happens when someone wants appearance without obedience.

In 1 Samuel 15, Saul tried to preserve his image while refusing full obedience to God. But the word of the Lord was clear: obedience is better than sacrifice.

That is still true.

We cannot keep rejecting God’s ways and expect to keep enjoying His favor in the same way.

God is not looking for religious appearance.

He is looking for surrendered obedience.

The Cost Does Not Stop With You

One of the heaviest parts of this message is that staying the same does not only affect us.

It affects our homes.

This is why we talked earlier this week about why your home must become an altar again.

It affects our spouse, our children, our atmosphere, our future, our business, our ministry, and our community.

Exodus 34:7 shows that sin has generational effects. Judges 2:10 tells us that a generation arose that did not know the Lord.

How does that happen?

It happens when one generation stops building altars. It happens when one generation stops obeying deeply. It happens when one generation starts settling into compromise while assuming the next generation will somehow figure it out.

Our refusal to change can become a weight our family has to carry.

That should sober us.

But it should also stir us.

Mercy Is Still Available

This message is strong, but it is not hopeless.

Isaiah 55:6-7 reminds us to seek the Lord while He may be found and to forsake wicked ways. James 4:8 says to draw near to God and He will draw near to us. 1 John 1:9 reminds us that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.

That is the hope.

You do not have to stay the same.

You do not have to keep circling the same mountain.

You do not have to stay bound, stuck, dry, stubborn, or stagnant.

You can surrender today.

You can repent today.

You can return today.

You can say, “Jesus, I surrender all. My life, my marriage, my children, my finances, my business, my ministry, my home, my future, it all belongs to You.”

That is where the shift begins.

Not when we pretend.

Not when we justify.

Not when we delay.

But when we finally lay it all down and let Jesus lead.
